Alex Maina is an entrepreneur and dedicated volunteer who exemplifies the supportive environment of Life Skills Oasis, having been involved with the organization for his fourth year, starting in 2019 just before COVID.
Alex initially began his time at Oasis in 2019, having been connected to the founder, Newton, after committing a "small case". Newton supported him, serving as his mentor, and successfully found someone to pay his school fees so he could attend high school from Form 1 through Form 4. Alex finished school in 2022.
To support himself, Alex runs a small job outside of Oasis, operating a movie shop where he sells movies and songs. He transfers this content onto phones, USB flash drives, or memory cards. He started this business last year (August) and works on it in the afternoon after his volunteer duties.Alex volunteers at Oasis, typically working from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM. His duties include training children how to play football and advising the little ones. He also works to feed and support the children, and provides counseling and advice to the older children. Alex is driven by a desire to "just give out" to the community, stating that Oasis helped him discover a love for working with children. He remains profoundly grateful, noting, "if it is not life skills, I don't know where I be", and is ready to pursue further studies if an opportunity arises to better "help the other children's daily".
